Lately, we have been receiving a lot of requests of people that want to join us for the Art Workshops in the Tempelhof shelter. We would like to apologize for not being able to answer to you all, we read all emails but we are currently at the top of our capacities.
This is why we are writing these FAQs, plus some short guidelines you can all access, and that will guide you on participating in this initiative, that in a month will turn 2 years old since we started it.
These guidelines are a part of a series of instructions we will publish in order to improve the communication and for you to be able to have answers from Hangar 1 in a fast and effective way.
Coming up, we will post guidelines for those doing research for school projects, and those wanting to get involved with Hangar 1 on different levels than Children’s Art Workshops.
What we do there?
Every Saturday, we go and play with the kids from 11:00 to 1pm.
How do we coordinate the access and participants?
Every Tuesday we release an event invitation on this Facebook group you need to join. On the event description, you have all the guidelines you need to follow in order to come play with the kids. You need to confirm your attendance to the event and check in, and once we confirm your check-in you are ready to go. We only have a maximum capacity of 12 people per playdate. This is not our call, but the center’s and we gotta respect it. Also, no spontaneous guests are possible. You gotta be on the list.
Are they any security measures?
Yes, there are.
You need a police check, please read below on how to get it.
It is compulsory that you bring a photo ID for the security guys at the entrance, we gotta go through a metal detector, and we must send a list with your full names on Thursday for Security to have it ready for when we come there. Inside the center, there are plenty of Security guys, all very nice, and we have not encountered a single issue.
Do you have to bring something?
Only if you want to. We have donations, so we buy everything for the activities from our fund.
At the moment, just accepting art and craft materials (If you have these, DO GET IN TOUCH!). Toys or clothes, must go directly to the center.
What are the playdates about?
We do pre-coordinated arts and crafts activities, and games that impulse teamwork. Most of us speak terrible German, but we try our best. If you can’t speak German, no worries, you can also participate and have a blast, between us, we communicate in English.
How do I get my police background check (Führungszeugnis)?
Go to your local Bürgeramt with your passport and anmeldung, if you go early enough you can go without appointment. Ask for the Führungszeugnis. They may ask you why you need it, you can either say it’s for volunteering, or that you need it for a job, whatever!
It’s 13 euros (bring your banking card) and it takes around a week.
Can you bring your kid?
OF COURSE! but please let us know beforehand, so we can give a heads up to the center. He/she has to check in as all the rest.
